FS0901 TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS LUNCH!

Hurray, another year have past and we have been frens for like almost two years going through both UNHAPPINESS and HAPPINESS:)

Every year our class will have this Christmas Lunch, but sadly, this time 4 our classmates couldnt make it. Nevertheless, i hoped that next year they could go:)

This year Christmas is surprisingly organise by me and Qasrina, it might not be very good, but still i hoped that everyone enjoy at least we make an effort to planned it. HAHA!! Anw, bottoms are few pictures of it.

It has been long that we last blog.

Welcome back to school. First week has past and i hope that you are going on well.

First week is like SLACKING week while the subsequence week we shall strive hard and Study well. :p

Well, for ur misfortunate, me and Qas will be your class reps for another semester! Haha. Dun be too sad ya? We will try our best this time to make it better again :p

Monday: Lesson as per usual lecture by Tay Mai Eng followed by prac by TSK!! This time the prac will be Fd Processing as wad TSK have said first 5 weeks it will be Fd processing practical.

Tuesday: Lecture by Sze Wee Ping then 6hours of break and 5-6 there will be Tut for Nutrition Science. Reminder there is no prac for both Analytical and Fdbiotech however, u can work out on ur project stuff ya? Make use of the time :p One more thing! Do pass up ur analytical report to Alvin ya!

Wednesday: Amy lecture at LTQ-6 and TSK tut is MOVED to FRIDAY 1-2PM!!.

Thursday: 4 hour of lecture straight by Jonny Quek and TSK. There is no prac for Proj3 but u are suppose to discuss and do ur presentation on SMOOTHIESS!! Hehe

Friday: Lecture by TSK at 830am. The time i am not very sure but i suppose its still like last week. If there is any changes i will tell u guys ya! After lecture straight it will be our tut by TSK for FPP then from 1-2 it will be FP tut. There is no tut for S & Q, but do ur project cause it is due on Week 7!!

Fun in Studies

It’s July! Time really flies! So fast one semester is going to end! Although this month is very busy for everybody, but most of us still had fun! During our food chemistry practical, we have to wait 1 hour plus for the experiment to finish, the whole class was entertaining themselves, dancing, singing and taking pictures in the chemistry lab!

However this month, there’s also many food science lecturers are leaving, one of them is Mr Stewart! Manage to take picture with the whole class before he leaves! Bye and thanks for teaching us sir!

And at the same time, taking a class photo too! But not a complete one.

Lastly SCL(LS) will hold a national day celebration at the auditorium annually, this time round its pushed to 23 July, as due to YOG, the school has to celebrate earlier. Below are some pictures of our classmates taking photos with the lecturers.

Although it’s kinda a short post, but picture speaks a thousand words!

School isn’t about studying only, we had our greatest fun in school with friends too!

Term break

My class looked forward to the month of June. The reason was really simple, it’s because our long waited term break was finally here. We needed the short 2 weeks break to relax ourselves a little more than usual school days as reports & projects were flooding in. Besides the reports & projects, Year 2 Food Science had 1 of their common test papers done on the 7th of June as our Food Chemistry lecturer will be leaving to do what she wanted to do which is to do research work.
The 2 weeks of break was also used to hang out with our friends & family members, complete or start on projects and most importantly is to study for the rest of our common test papers. Some of us met up on certain days of the 2 weeks to discuss projects in the school’s library and we had lunch together in Koufu. We enjoyed ourselves as we chat and joke around with each other. =))
Now that the term break and common test papers are all done, we’re back to school with our usual routines. Heard that the common tests results will be out pretty soon, I hope all of us in NYP did well for their papers. All the best!

As planned, we will be organising our first class outing for Sem 2 in 2 days' time. We will be going to Singapore zoo to watch the animals on Tuesday(8 June). Trust me, it's a very fun place to go. Except the fact that the weather sucks to the core nowadays. Let's just pray it won't rain heavily on the day itself and the sun would give us some mercy.

Referring to the e-mail that was sent to you, we will be meeting at 11am at the Zoo itself. Those who doesn't know how to get there can meet me and oktavia with some other people at Woodlands Interchange first and we can just take a straight bus from there. (:

Bring your own packed lunch or we just eat at the KFC in the zoo. Afterwhich, we shall train down to Esplanade through the circle line to have dinner at Makansutra. I heard that the food there is very nice and affordable. You can put aside 10 bucks for dinner. I also heard that the grilled fish(Ikan Bakar) and the seafood's there is awesome too, so we shall give it a try. ^^

Nevertheless, due to the travelling issue, i'm fine if we decide to change the venue to have dinner. If you have any ideas on where we can have dinner, do leave a tag. :)

Here are some pointers for a more memorable experience at the Singapore Zoo:

Protect those peepers! Sensitive to sunlight? We recommend that you bring sunshades, sunglasses or visors to keep the glare away. Better yet, soothe on some sun block for added skin protection.

Rain, rain, go away! The rain sometimes makes an unexpected appearance. Having an umbrella or raincoat handy will ensure you remain dry should this happen. Many parts of the zoo are sheltered though, and you'll still be able to enjoy excellent views of the animals from there.

Mozzie alert? Although the zoo does take preventive measures to keep the mosquitoes and other creepy crawlies at bay, you might want to consider bringing some insect repellant to make sure they stay away! The zoo is after all situated in a secondary rainforest and many animals treat this as a haven.

Take your time! There's always something happening at the zoo. Allow at least half a day to enjoy what's available, but a full day would be even better.

Make sure you pick up a map as you enter so you won't miss out on the many animal presentations, token feeding sessions, keeper talks, rides and photography opportunities that happen during the day.

Feet first! Taking a leisurely stroll is the ideal way to enjoy everything the zoo has to offer. Comfortable footwear will ensure you get to explore the park endlessly, minus sore and tired feet.

Tired of walking? Then hop onto a tram to rest your soles. Or take a break at one of the shelters while you get your wind back. Many of our exhibits also have viewing galleries that allow you to observe the animals comfortably.

Wheels galore! We realise long walks might be taxing for little feet. Parents can rent strollers and wagons for their children. Wheelchairs are also available for those who need it.

Stay hydrated! As the weather in Singapore tends to be hot and humid year-round, do remember to bring enough drinking water, and keep drinking throughout the day. An ample supply is on sale at our numerous F&B outlets if you happen to run out.

Munch time! If you have a morning to spare, why not indulge in the world-famous Jungle Breakfast With Wildlife programme, which happens daily, between 9.00 -10.30am. Visitors streaming in at other times of the day can fuel up at Ah Meng Restaurant or Ben & Jerry’s at Rainforest Kidzworld. At the entrance, a variety of bites are available at Pizzafari, Ah Meng Kopi and KFC.

Remember though, to savour the food for yourselves and not to share with any of the animals. Their diets are well taken care of.

Service with a smile. If in doubt at any time, do approach any of our guest relations officers or any of our staff in fact. They will be more than happy to answer any questions you might have.

NAVY OPEN HOUSE

The month of May was certainly a good one, since there was the E-learning week on week 5, which meant that we didn’t need to come to school for lessons.

The class went for the Navy open House at Changi Naval Base on the 21^st of May, which was on the last day of the E-learning week. We were ferried to the location by chartered buses. Once there, we proceeded on to view the huge ships that were docked at the piers. We had to climb up and down steep stairs carefully as we were not used to taking such stairs. It was an eye-opener for all of us, since we had the opportunity to discover what’s in a navy ship. There was also a helicopter which we explored too. There was even a machine gun that was attached to the helicopter! Apparently, it is used to shoot at the enemies.

After all the exploration, it was time to assemble at grand stand for the ship cruise at noon. The ship cruise was the highlight of the Navy Open House and the entire class was excited about it since this was the first time that all of us were on board a navy ship. Not every visitor to the Navy Open House could experience the ship cruise since balloting was required, so we were thankful to Jo-An Toh for winning the facebook quiz and won the ship cruise tickets. There was a breeze as the ship cruised in the waters off Singapore and our hair flew along in the breeze. We thoroughly enjoyed the cruise, especially when the ship made a 360 degrees turn.

When the cruise was over, we had snacks and drinks before playing games in the air-conditioned tents. After which, we took a coach back to school. We were worn out by then. Some of us were sun burnt too, which was no surprise since the sun was burning hot by the time we were on the ship cruise.

Since Mr Steward has cancelled tmr food ingredient lecture and Mr Tay has cancelled tmr unit operation tutorial, we will not need to come to school.

Food Chemistry Practical 3 and 4a reports which are supposed to hand it to me tmr will also change. Please bring your practical 3 and 4a to school on Coming Monday Food Chemistry Lecture which is 31 may 2010. I will collect from all of you and hand in to her. Hand in practical 3 and 4a on 31 may 2010.

Regarding practical 3, I have feedback to miss marlene that the class cannot find the concentration of sodium bicarbonate in baking soda.She replied to me that if you cannot find concentration of sodium bicarbonate in baking soda then just put the calculated value in your conclusion. For practical 3 conclusion, just put the calculated value.

Monday - 31 may 2010- Food Chemistry Lecture will be a revision lecture for us from week 1 to week 6 lecture notes. Please be punctual so you we won't lose anything for Common Test

Tuesday - 1 june 2010- Since Food Micro lecture has becoming E-learning for us so we will have a revision of practical from week 1 to week 4 at N504 11pm to 1pm.

Dear class,

Please remember to bring FOOD CHEMISTRY experiment 4b tomorrow(24 May) so that Ms Marlene can go through that e-practical with all of you during lecture. those who don't know how to do, at LEAST draw the different stages of the starch development. the slides are found in blackboard. And.

There's no FOOD CHEMISTRY practical on thursday(27 May), so school ends at 1pm for all of us. (: but the remaining 2 REPORTS must still be handed in to Hui Xian on thursday.

There's NO SCHOOL on Friday(28 May) due to public holiday(vesak day).

As usual, each year, our class will be given a sum of money to be used for CLASS OUTING.

This year, i'm not really sure where our class will be heading to. If you guys do have any ideas, tell me and Oktavia okay? :)

The class outing will be held most probably during June holidays, so please make yourselves FREE. I will confirm the date with all of you after Common Test.

UNIT OPERATION
Individual E Learning Assignment
Part of the learning process for this unit is to engage the use of e-learning. A website link is attached for all students to access so that they can have a better understanding of a specific food processing method used for a specific processed food.
Students are expected to view the video and answer specific questions in regards to the video clip. This is a graded assignment, which will account to 5% of the total grade. Students are expected to submit a soft copy of the answer by 23 May 2010 to the instructor.
Students are to report to instructor if they have problem accessing the website immediately so that alternate assignment can be assigned to students.

Dear class, a few important matters to take note of :
1. For tomorrow (13 May), please bring Experiment 3 & 4a for FOOD CHEMISTRY practical.

2. There will be NO UNIT OPERATIONS tutorial tomorrow. (13 May)

3. Since on FRIDAY (20 May) the week after the e-learning week(which is week 6) is a public holiday due to vesak day, there will be no UNIT OPERATIONS lecture. thus, the make-up lecture will be divided into 2 days. 1 hour per day. One day from week 4(which is this week) and one day from week 7.

For week 4, come for UNIT OPERATIONS lecture this FRIDAY (14 May) at 9am!
For week 7, come for UNIT OPERATIONS lecture on FRIDAY (4 June) at 9am!

YIPPEEEEE!!!!!! FINALLY IT’S THE DAY OF OUR 0901- 3D2N CLASS CHALET!

THE DAY THAT ALL OF US HAD BEEN WAITING FOR HAD ARRIVED!

we started out the day by gathering at the IMM Giant @ Jurong East, buying all the essential items such as food and drinks. Later did we realise that we had actually bought so much of stuff till the bill showed $150. Nevertheless, we don’t have to worry also.

WHY??? Cos we have the guys to carry all those heavy stuffs!!! ;)

Soooo....Seri, Qasrina and I just have to relax in one corner while Alvin, Haris, Ashley and Yeh Xiang, have to carry them! Naaaa...it’s ok!! You Guys are MACHO right!!!! :P

Anyway, we would like to thank you all for helping out on that morning. Seri's father brought us to ALOHA LOYANG RESORT! We sincerely thank him for taking the trouble to drive us there despite his busy schedule. Thanks alot uncle!

We reached our terrace. It’s quite big and spacious for a total sum of $181.90. This is considered a cheap amount already. Plus, the utensils and other toiletries provided were in good condition. Apart from that, the facilities there were easily assessable as the swimming pool was just right in front of our terrace and you can find a mini shop and an arcade if you walk further in abit.

Well, for the first day, since not many people came, we just decided to swim and play water-polo. There is no doubt that u will find peace and tranquillity once you’ve submerged yourself in the hot pool. What a great feeling! After all those fun moments in the pool, we had steamboat for dinner. All of us had a fun time mixing the ingredients like crabsticks, fish balls, squid balls, white mushrooms, cabbages, fishcakes, and prawns. A splendid time eating steamboat with our fellow classmates!

the second day, Some of us went shopping for lunch while the rest stayed at our terrace playing badminton, watching TV, swimming, and Uno and there’s more thing that made this day “extra special”!!

It’s results day!!!!!! Goshh....why did they put it on the day of our chalet??? Haiz...so we checked our results! All too excited already...haha! Well, for some, it was great news, but the others, it was bad news! No matter what kinda marks you guys get, just remember to work hard next time to achieve your desired grades yea! For those who did well enough, Congrats! Do well for next year too! Wish you guys all the best:)

At night, we're having BBQ!! Yeah!!!

Around 6 pm, we helped one another to marinate chickens, put them into satay sticks etc...

There were various food to eat for the BBQ: Chickens, prawns, marshmallows, sweet potatoes and some leftover food from the previous night for steamboat. Some of our classmates joined us that night as well. Our mentor, Mr Tay, came with his wife and kid too!!! Vicky, the crazy OGL, dropped by to see us. Thanks alot everyone!

After a few hours, some of us grew hungry and prepared laksa! (Laksa of our own version....Hahahahha) Anyway, it turned out well. What are we? Food science students! Dun play play hor... : P

Around 2am, all of us did not sleep. Instead, we played hunter and polar bear. This game is very interesting. There’ll be a narrator, who assigns 2 hunters and polar bears while we close our eyes. *1 tap: Polar bear; 2 taps: Hunter*

Those not chosen are considered villagers. Both the hunters know who the polar bears are but the latter are not aware of the former. So, those 2 polars are supposed to go around killing villagers and the duty of both hunters is to convince them that the 2 people are the killers. Its up to the villagers to believe them. They may choose to ignore the hunters and play along with their instinct. After 2 hours of that game, we played truth or dare. Haha! Funny to see people doing all sorts of forfeits.

last day of the chalet, we have to get ready by 9.15am. A person will come in and check whether all those equipments are still in good condition and in the same position.

Once all procedures are done, we waited for the shuttle bus to drop us at the Pasir Ris Mrt station. Till then...... HomE sweet hOmE!!! :)

We thank everyone who came for the chalet and made it a successful one!

Hope you guys have enjoyed during those 3 days, 2 nights!!!!

I know that everybody in FS0901 was very stress about the examination.
Just relax and do your best.
We still have one more paper to go. It was physic for food science.
The last paper ended at 4 of March.
After that, we can have fun with one another.Haha!
I think everybody started to have the ''holiday mood".
Lets put all the fun during the March chalet.

food exhibition

Today is our project 1 food exhibition. This module (Project 1) is part of the curriculum for National Education (NE). So, we are required to complete a project which is about modifying a local snack/ appetizer/ side dish frequently eaten in festive season such as Lunar New Year, Dragon Boat Festival, etc. We are also required to make modifications to the dish in line with the current or future food trends in Singapore. We had done a lot of trials and finally came up with 5 finalised and modified products for each group.

Group 1 modified traditional Tang Yuan by adding sweet potato into the skin and filling of the Tang Yuan. Group 2 modified Orh Ni (Traditional yam dessert eaten frequently during Chinese weddings and birthday celebrations) into Yam Yoghurt by replacing coconut milk in Orh Ni with yoghurt. Group 3 modified traditional rice dumplings into Tom Yum flavoured rice dumplings. Group 4 did a fusion of Indian food (Roti Jala) and Chinese food (Popiah) which they call it “Jalapiah”. Group 5 modified traditional Nian Gao (Rice cakes) by using Korean type Nian Gao and stir-frying in 2 different sauces (Black Pepper and Chilli crab sauce).

On the day of the exhibition, we came early to prepare our ingredients and the exhibition was a huge success. It was a very good job to all the Food Science students (Year 1, 2 and 3) for their hard work for this exhibition.

The 'school mood' has finally caught up to us. It is week 7 and we have already done many small scale projects, presentations, and tests. Our first communication skills presentation was also our first individual presentation. But still, many of us presented fluently.

This month we started on our Project 1 trials. It has been fun and yet stressful for most of us, as there is much planning, meetings, going out to buy ingredients, and brainstorming needed weekly. The food products we are modifying are, tang yuan, rice dumpling, yam paste, rice cakes, and popiah. Many blunders have been made in the kitchen but it’s normal to have mistakes during our first few trials I guess. Some of the groups have already perfected their recipe and have been serving breakfast to the class for 2 weeks so far. For example, the ‘jalapiah’ group has been generously giving their delicious product for us for ‘testing’ frequently. Others are yet to come up with a suitable modification or procedure. Well, all the best guys! (:

Our common tests are coming soon, but after that will be our much awaited 2 week break and Christmas! And then it will be a new year already. Oh and don’t forget we have a Christmas gift exchange and celebration on the last day of our common test. Everyone should be present for this if not we’re not able to use our 4 x 25 bucks, like in our previous class outings.

class outing to sentosa.

A trip to Sentosa .It was supposed to be a class outing for FS0901 students. However, it ended up with the half of the class going to Sentosa. I specially want to thank the people who went to Sentosa from the bottom of my heart that they really made this outing a very wonderful one. Especially Irine, she spent $100 to book a ticket to come to Singapore from Indonesia. Her purpose was to meet us and enjoy this outing with us for this few hours. Classmates who were Singaporeans, don’t you think all the more you should come and join the fun? Irine intentionally spent her money and time to come back from batam to join us. I really appreciated her very much.First, we met at Vivo City at 12.00pm then we took a monorail to Sentosa beaches. Next, we took a tram to Siloso beach. We prefer Siloso beach to other beaches because it had facilities such as the basketball court, volleyball court, wider open space and more for us to have our activities. Although it was only half the class, we still played very uncontrollably in high spirits. We played different types of games such as basketball, volleyball, captain ball, Frisbees and dog and bone. Among all the games, most of us loved captain ball and dog and bone. There were the most interesting among all and most of us were familiar with them. After these exciting activities, we also had our picnics to replenish our energy. We drank water and ate some tidbits. Everyone bought different snacks so we had a wide range of variety of snacks and chips. People tended to be lazier after eating so we did not carry on our ball activities. Instead we played cards game followed by captain ball. When we felt that we were sick of the games, we decided to have some water activities. Some of us played ball games in the sea while others played water bomb. When everyone was drenched, we cleaned and packed up our stuffs then headed to toilets to have our shower. Once everyone was ready, we started to take out our handphone to snap photos of each other and have a group photo. It was evening time; everyone was exhausted after a day and was hunger for food. We went to Habourfront coffee shop to have our dinner. After eating, we took train back together. Although it was long and tiring day in Sentosa, everyone enjoyed ourselves. We are looking forward to another class outing. This time hopefully whole class can come together and have fun.

We just ended our examination on the 3^rd September 2009.

The exams , as usual, were stressful and an heartache to all of us. And why was that so? It’s just the pressure and some of the questions which were unbelievably difficult as well as unexpected. However, we all tried our best, putting in alot of efforts and hoping for the best results. The lecturers did a great job by imparting knowledge and preparing all of us for the semestral exams. We really want to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the lectures and tutors consisting Dr Badri, Mr Ong , Ms Lye, Dr Subra and the rest of them, who thought us well. We all appreciate their effort, Thank you! When the last paper ended, the students grinned from ear to ear. The hardwork that was put in was sure worthy and there was the feeling of satisfaction. Our classmate, Jun, went back to KOREA!! That place is definitely a place that is a MUST to go as it is just wonderful as hearing stories from her about the amazing places like JEJU island. It makes me want to travel there for the second time. I bet the class would have an enjoyable holiday by playing basketball soccer, watching movies , meeting up with one another and many more. Holidays are times where all activities are possible as time is not an issue anymore. WE ARE FREE!! I heard classmates talking about working and earning some bucks for new clothes and many more. All fun -filled activities will be finally experienced by the end of the holidays, i hope. The class outing is up next. We planned at the end of September and the date for the outing was 6^th October.
